Every two hours someone in the UK is paralysed by a spinal cord injury. It can happen to anyone at any time and no one is prepared for how it will change their life. Aspire is a national charity that provides practical help, supporting spinal cord injured people from injury to independence.

Story

Update 6. Success! Thanks to all the sponsorship and encouragement, I've made it! Well over over 1500 lengths - not quite up to David Walliam's swim, although I didn't have the current with me. There was no applause as I climbed out of the pool after the last swim - just a sense of sheer relief, as half way through the 3 months I thought I'd not make it. Now back to some condocs. And there is still time to sponsor me if you wish.

Update 5. Over 2 months in and 1,360 lengths down; Calais is just about visible through the fog. This morning's 2km swim clocked in at at under 55 mins - a PB! - I struggled to do it in an hour at the start, so at least I am getting faster.

Update 4. Five weeks down, over half way there with 20km swum and one black eye (the trouble with doing front crawl when the pool has no lanes and novice swimmers decide to swim, well, flail their limbs, across your path). Come on that must be worth another donation!

Update 3. Four weeks down and 16km sorted - nearly 20km to go. How come swimming 4km a week doesn't seem easy by now?

Update 2. Another week under my belt and I have now completed 10km, so now approaching the busy shipping lane! Aspire has persuaded me to increase my target as soon as I had exceeded it - Big Brother has many eyes! So tell your friends and lets try to make that magic £2k.

Update 1. The swim started last week. Despite being away at the CIOT conference all weekend and in London most of the week I've managed to do the first 6km. It was a bit like swimming through treacle, but I'm getting faster and the donations are still rolling in, which is amazing - a big thank you to everyone!

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. Please dig deep.

Yes, I must be mad. Having done this challenge twice in the last 6 years it seems to get harder each time. 160 lengths of the pool a week from September until December - and most weeks in one visit. Not sure when I'll fit it in - but then sleep was never compulsory.
