Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

We are three women who have known each other for 12 years sharing many celebrations, burdens and a few bottles of wine with each other.

When Natalie decided to run a half-marathon for charity - Helen and Lou jumped in to join the cause.

Natalie explains why: "I am what is best described as a reluctant runner...

I have spent the majority of my life avoiding any physical activity.

I was utterly perplexed by the rules, and the point, of netball and hockey at school. I graduated on to strenuously avoiding exercise all through university and well into adulthood.

Recently, while nestled comfortably on the sofa, I got in touch with an old school friend, Alex, on Facebook.

I noticed he had founded something called Harrison's Fund.

Asking him about it meant I found out about the amazing things Alex has been up to in recent years.

How Harrison, his eldest son, was diagnosed in 2011 with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy - a life-limiting disease with no cure.

By the time Harrison is a teenager, he will lose the ability to walk.

Eventually he'll lose all muscle function in his body. Like all boys with Duchenne he'll die in his late teens or early twenties from heart or respiratory failure.

Alex took action - setting up Harrison's Fund with a simple goal in mind: to get as much money as possible into the hands of the world's best researchers, who are working to find a cure for Duchenne. This could not only help Harrison, but all 2,500 sufferers of the syndrome in the UK.

In order to raise money, Alex took on serious physical challenges. He went from (in his own words) Flabby Daddy to Ironman, taking Harrison with him on Challenge Denmark - 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride and a 26.2-mile marathon. This is well-recognised as one of the most gruelling endurance challenges there is.

So really, I have no excuse.

This is why - reluctant runner that I am - I will be running 13.1 miles for Alex & Harrison.

I am incredibly lucky to have two amazing friends who have taken on the challenge with me.

It says everything about the lovely ladies that they are, that Helen & Lou are joining me and fundraising alongside me for Harrison’s Fund. They don’t know Alex nor Harrison, but with both working in the medical profession and mothers themselves, they understand how vital it is to help raise funding to find a cure for Duchenne."
