Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I am walking 10 miles of the Mendip Challenge. Not much you may think, but my distance walking generally consists of walking up a slope to get to work... It's not until you have been with someone who is unable to do such a simple thing, that you realise how important and often challenging, the simple things actually are. Over a period of eight months I watched my husband, Simon, go from being at the gym five times a week doing spinning classes and lifting weights, to being unable to lift himself out of bed. Cancer is a very destructive illness.
The Day Unit at Weston Hospicecare offered Simon somewhere to relax and be part of a shared community. He always came back smiling and with a full tummy - the food is really delicious and plentiful! The staff are so friendly and really do care about each person and their families.
At the end of December 2012, Simon and I got married. By this time, he was gravely ill, so we spent our 'honeymoon' at the In-Patient unit at the hospice. The staff again, were fantastic and looked after both of us, as well as our families.
The care and attention they gave to Simon will be something that will stay with me forever. By taking part in the Mendip Challenge, I hope to be able to make some contribution towards continuing the work of Weston Hospicecare and the support they give to people and their families. Each step we take will be in memory of Simon, but also a thank you to Weston Hospicecare.
