Bupa Great South Run 2014 · 26 October 2014 ·

We aim to promote community participation in healthy recreation, for the benefit of children and young people up to the age of 16 residing in Devon, Herefordshire and Somerset by the provision of grants and facilities for playing football while also raising awareness of bowel cancer.

Story

What started off as a house bonding session for me and the five guys I'm living with at University next year turned serious quite quickly.

We devised a tournament on FIFA in which every person played each other twice as their supported team, on the condition that the loser would compete in the Great South Run, wearing clothes and supporting a charity chosen by the winner.

I'm not a very good runner, and I'm even less of a good 'gamer', meaning my fate was quickly sealed in a competition where I came up against the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham as Yeovil Town.

I did, however, manage to convince the eventual winner to pick the Adam Stansfield Foundation. When I was younger and went to watch Yeovil play football, he was always one of my favourites - never not running, always committed to the team, and a memorable goalscorer. In April 2010, it was announced that Adam had been diagnosed with a form of colorectal cancer, leading to his death in August of the same year at the age of 31.

The foundation was set up in September 2010 to raise the awareness of bowel cancer, with the charity's aim being the promotion of "community participation in healthy recreation for the benefit of children residing in Devon, Herefordshire and Somerset by the provision of grants and facilities for playing football."

Given the football related nature of the forfeit, my own support for Yeovil and current residence in Exeter, there really could not have been a more suitable choice of charity. What originally seemed like a forfeit has now become a great challenge for me for a great cause, and any support you can give would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. On a very unfortunately related note, the costume which has been chosen for me to run in is that of a "sexy nurse". Make-up included. Cheers.
