Story
The Salvation Army has been serving the communities of New Addington and Fieldway for over 6 decades. Today, as well as being a lively community church, (famous locally for the annual community panto and SingCR0nise Community Choir amongst other things), The Salvation Army runs The Vine Food Bank, which provides food and other essentials to local people in crisis. We work closely with other local community agencies and churches in order to best support the people we're privileged to serve.
The Vine is more than a foodbank. We offer a hand up as well as a hand out so that people are able to move beyond their current circumstances where possible. Under normal circumstances, when somebody visits us after being referred for a food parcel, they are invited to sit down, share a cup of tea and talk through the reasons for their food poverty. We determine the best way forward and signpost them to any additional help and support available, including other agencies that can help with debt advice, unemployment or mental health issues. We may also be able to help people in a practical way with small household items. We rely on donations from the general public to make this work possible.
Due to the Covid-19 limitations, we are operating on a much more restricted basis, with food being distributed in pre-packed bags at the door. Referrals are rising rapidly and we are working with other local agencies to ensure that food parcels are distributed to those who need them.
The generous giving of our supporters enables us to alleviate some of the challenges faced by the people who are referred to us during particularly difficult periods in their lives.
Thank you for your support.
