My wife, Sophie, was diagnosed with Lupus 2 years ago and it has had a huge impact on our families lives. Lupus wasn’t something we knew anything about and unfortunately my family are now all too aware of how bad this disease can be.
Lupus is a condition that affects the immune system. It can cause problems with your skin, joints, kidneys and other organs.
Symptoms of lupus include joint pain, extreme tiredness and a rash on your face. Lupus is caused by your immune system mistakenly attacking healthy parts of your body.
There's currently no cure for lupus.
Sophie is only 32 years old with 3 children. Sophie doesn’t have ‘good days’. Everyday is a struggle. Some days she can’t get out of bed, due to the pain and fatigue on her body. She can’t do the basic things like a school run without being in pain and coming home and needing to sleep. Pictures on social media show the good times, but the reality is that everyday is a struggle. Sophie’s resting heart rate can go as high as 180bpm. That in itself is scary. Sophie has to take multiple tablets everyday, tablets that side effects have an impact on her liver and kidney. Heart failure is another risk, the list goes on.
We know there isn’t a fix for this and that her life before Lupus will never exist again. I want to try and raise some money and awareness in support of Sophie and anyone else who suffers from Lupus.
Lupus awareness month has a challenge to walk 31 miles in October. I’ll be setting myself a target of walking 93 miles in October (31 miles for each of our children) to try and raise awareness to friends, family and beyond. I won’t be taking into account the school run; playing football, or any exercise etc.. towards my final result. I want each mile to be walked specific to this fundraiser. I will be recording my walks on the Strava app and will share these updates so you can track my progress.
Please do support us as much as you can, and if you can't donate please take the time to learn more about Lupus. Educating friends and family (and beyond) about Lupus is just as important to me as raising some money for charity.
I'll be providing updates, progress and information here and on my Instagram page.
Thank you
