The Story:
On her 17th birthday, my mum was diagnosed with advanced Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Despite all odds, and after gruelling chemotherapy and radiotherapy, she beat it, passed her A-Levels and secured a place at the University of Sheffield.
Later, all within four years, she she gave birth to two healthy girls, developed, and successfully fought a non-malignant tumour which was pressing against her spinal cord and breast cancer with more surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
These later tumours have all stemmed from the radiotherapy of mum's initial cancer - where they basically blasted her entire body with radiation.
Five years ago, mum got breast cancer again. We thought it was an 'easy' job - with a double mastectomy. Unfortunately, it hasn't been entirely caught and in 2022 she was rushed to hospital with severe neck pain. It turns out, the cancer has become metastatic and has been eating at her spine. Mum had been walking around (and bell ringing) with a broken neck for many months! She has successfully recovered from surgery to install a titanium brace.
I'm very impressed with the support Macmillan is giving Mum during this time - and I feel like it's my time to give something back - whilst releasing some "outdoorsy" endorphins at the same time.
