Story

Rat and I will taking part in this years Official Mountain Marathon.

2 day test of endurance, teamwork and mountain skills

Held in some of the most remote locations at a time of year when conditions can be extremely challenging.

Teams of 2 spend 2 days using their mountain skills to find a series of checkpoints spread across 420km2 remote UK wilderness. At the end of day 1 teams head to a remote mountain campsite.

The teams are self-reliant for the duration and must carry everything they will need.

LOCATION: UK Mountains at the end of October

WEATHER: rain, sleet, high winds, hail, sun…possibly

ROUTE: You decide!

DAY 1 CAMPSITE: Remote campsite in the mountains

SKILLS REQUIRED: endurance, navigation, survival, route selection, teamwork, intelligence!

TERRAIN: Trail, bog, mud, tussocks, track, heather, scree, rock, grass, forest, river.

The OMM is made to test everything about a competitor. You don’t have to the fittest or the best navigator to complete the OMM but between you and your team mate you must have all the skills and mental endurance required to negotiate the mountains safely at the end of October.

To complete the OMM requires determination above anything else. None stop determination for 36 hours.

We will be doing this in support of The Rory Peck Trust,

The Rory Peck Trust provides practical and financial support to freelance journalists and their families worldwide, assisting them in times of crisis and helping them to work more safely and professionally.

Why a mountain marathon? Because preparing and participating in the mountain marathon we will go through the same process as many  freelancer journalists may do preparing for an assignment.
Planning and preparation
Risk Assessment
Equipment to do the job
Physically and mentally prepared
Navigation and understanding the geography
Prepared for weather conditions

All money raised will go to the trust, to use as they see fit.
