Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Well, I completed my physical challenge last month, climbing up more than
3200 irregular stone steps to Ulleri, a small village in Western Nepal with no road access. It was tough, especially in the heat!
Up until now this village has had no library or internet. Secondary age children go down and up the steps every day to school. Three years ago, my nephew James, who was then living and working in Abu Dhabi, (and currently lives in Indonesia) discovered how little there was for the local people, when he visited Ulleri. He was there to visit Khem and Khem’s wife Neera, who had worked with James’s family in the Middle East. Khem and Neera, had returned to their home village when Neera became pregnant.
James set up a project to build a library to provide the local children, young people and adults with a range of books and educational games, and Khem became project manager. Building materials had to be carried up the 3280 steps and now the library is finally open. A group of us climbed up to the village, arriving in time for its official opening on May 9th. We then spent a day setting up the library ready for use.
The
project will shortly provide internet access for the village, and the library will
have several internet-connected
computers.
The books for adults in the library mainly contain information on healthcare, agriculture, tourism and foreign languages
The library will occasionally supply children with pens, notebooks, school bags and other school materials.
James and his wife Charlotte have done a brilliant job raising funds to build the library, and we're now raising money for equipment and running costs. There's a lot more info about the project here:
