Why are we doing this?
We are donating to the Intensive Care Unit of Birmingham Children's Hospital. Unfortunately, too many of us have been personally touched by the commitment and dedication of the work and care that goes on this hospital so when thinking about a charity to donate to, there was no question this was the right one...
‘I am running in memory of my brother Craig. To show how proud I am for the strength my parents have shown throughout my life and in respect for the staff at Birmingham Children’s Hospital who see poorly children day in and day out.
Before I was born, my brother passed away shortly after being diagnosed with a leaking heart valve.
He was under the care of the Heart Ward and the Intensive Care Unit of Birmingham’s Children’s Hospital, who successfully replaced his mitral valve but unfortunately he died due to complications. He was Two and a half years old!
Whilst I will never be able to fully comprehend the pain and hurt my family went through I do know that they were comforted by the love and strength shown to Craig and them during my brothers short time in their care.
My family and I hope the donations go a small way in helping others have a more positive outcome xx’ Adam Sharkey
'In January 2018 our daughter Ophelia began vomiting and couldn't stop. She was in agonising pain, screaming and screaming and vomiting faeces.
Nothing could prepare us for the earth shattering news that Ophelia had a 13cm x 8cm mass in her abdomen. It was filling her whole abdominal cavity. Her bowel and stomach were pressed up into her left rib.
We were told to prepare for the worst.
‘There are no benign abdominal tumours in children'.
We were told 'cancer' and that 'we should go away and spend some time talking to each other now... it will save you heartache later on'. They were preparing us to lose her.
48 hours later we had an MRI under general anaesthetic and the wait for those two hours with were the worst two hours of our life. When the results finally came- 'it does not look like it has spread.'
Light and life and hope and air and breath and untold possibilities were ours in an instant.
We thought we would never bring her home. We thought she would die in hospital.
Under the exceptional care of Birmingham Children’s Hospital’s ‘real life superhero’ Mr Singh, and his superhero team, our beautiful daughter Ophelia underwent miraculous, incredible keyhole surgery to remove a huge but benign, non cancerous, mesenteric cyst.
We were so lucky. They had never seen this very very rare cyst in a child before.
It was much more likely to be cancer.
The cyst had formed during the earliest phase of her development in utero. It was everywhere. There were multiple growths filled with fluid.
But now, thanks to Birmingham Children’s Hospital it was gone.
In any other time and any other place we would have lost her. Her death would have been longer and slower and more painful than we can imagine. Birmingham Children’s Hospital saved us from this.
We spent eight days in Birmingham Children's Hospital. They did so much saving. They saved our child. They saved our family. They saved our future. No words can really capture or quantify the gratitude we feel. Holly and James Perks xx
"My dad and I are raising money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital in appreciation of our gratitude and thanks following an emergency operation which saved my life.
I was born in Solihull Hospital with severe breathing difficulties and was immediately rushed to Heartlands Hospital on a ventilator where I was diagnosed with Tracheoesophagel fistula (TOF) which meant I was breathing into my stomach and consuming food into my lungs. I was quickly taken to Birmingham Children’s Hospital for emergency surgery which corrected the problem and kept in intensive care for a week.
Thanks to the professionalism and dedication of the consultant, surgeons and hospital staff that evening and in the days that followed, I am here to recognise their great work.
Please give generously, as there are countless stories similar to mine and will be in the future". Sarinjit Singh Bahia xx
