When pregnant with my 3rd child I went to my 20week scan to find out the sex an our dreams were answered with our first boy. While there they did the usual checks of sizes an growth etc but the midwife noticed sumthin unusual. She did not give us any information an if anything played down that there was a problem as such! We was then referred to another hospital to see a scan expert which I was told was just because he had been in a odd position an couldn't get all the measurements. We given my 1st ever 3D scans an was so happy I could see him. I was on my own (husband was outside with our 2 girls as kids were not allowed in) so held then back, didn't wanna look stupid! At the end was told very bluntly their was a problem with his heart but he can not diagnose him with anything without a second opinion from a specialist! I was then sent to Evelina straight away..... I was scanned a told straight away he has a rare condition called 'right sided arotic arch' an a suspected 'vsd' (hole in the heart)! I broke down an was then on top of that we was told a lot of specail needs conditions r linked to the heart condition an was told a genetics test is advised but was up to us. The problem was I was 23 weeks at the time and doing the test so late in pregnancy is dangerous it could either bring on early labour or miscarriage. We had 5mins to decide (was one of the worst days of my life). We had to do it as we had 2 other kids to think about an it could change our lives if their was a life changing problem. I went through with it an then had to wait 2 long weeks get the result that everythin was clear!!! So for rest of pregnancy was monitored closely. I gave birth on the 12th of July at 5am at 5lbs 'Jamie Jr Ian Bricknell' after being induced at 36weeks as I had gradually been loosing fluid since havin the test done an had none left (which is bad as it is let alone a baby with heart problems). He was whisked to a ward to be monitored, he has a few problems but they were sorted before leaving a week later. He had his first appointment, he had lots of test an we was given a lot more info an support! As of now we are waiting for another appointment as he was a too tiny for see rain tests. One being a camera being put down his throat to check the tightness of his pipes. If u know or have looked up the condition you will understand why. He will need a operation at sometime it's just when is still up in the air as he was only 1week at the time! The people at Evelina have been so kind an supportive and I still can't believe we have not had to pay for anything. The hospital itself is so welcoming and calming for the kids. We want to give back and make sure that it can continue for the unfortunate people that will follow us.....
