Stroke kills three times as many women as breast cancer and twice as many men as prostate cancer. Stroke Association-funded researchers are at the forefront of discovering new treatments with the potential to save lives and reduce the debilitating effects of stroke for thousands of people.
One of the treatments currently being trialled is IL-1Ra, a drug that works by reducing inflammation in the brain following stroke. Early indications suggest that if administered shortly after a stroke, IL-1Ra has the power to significantly improve the lives of stroke survivors in the future by limiting paralysis and other adverse side effects of this devastating condition.
“If we can prove the effectiveness of IL-1Ra - and I believe that we can - then we will have all the knowledge we need to move on to a full-scale trial. With a gift today, you could help to get a trial like this underway” - Professor P Tyrrell, Professor of Stroke Medicine
