Running a marathon is tough, but a few hours of hard work is nothing compared to the life of a seafarer. Months on end away from home, little or no contact with family, and having to endure rough seas and physical work can take its toll. More than 25% of seafarers suffer from depression, and since 2014, crew deaths attributed to suicide have more than tripled from 4.4% to 15.3%.
The Sailors' Society (www.sailorssociety.org) provides fantastic and comprehensive support to seafarers in every corner of the globe. They visit ships in ports and talk with seafarers away from home, provide access to medical treatment, liaise with families, build homes and schools, the list goes on.
Team Sage has signed up to run the London Marathon on 28 April 2019 for the Sailors' Society. We have committed to raise at least GBP 4,000 and to raise awareness of the issues that seafarers face. It's a great cause. Almost everything we consume each day comes by sea - our food, our cars, our phones. We all rely on seafarers much more than we know.
We, the Sailors' Society and the 1.6 million seafarers around the world would appreciate your help.
Thanks for your support!
