My name is Val Stones , I was on the GBBO in 2016, you may know me as he Cake whisperer or remember me exercising as I baked.

What folk don’t know is that I have Osteoporosis which is an incurable disease but it is manigable.  I broke my wrist 14 years ago and was diagnosed with osteoporosis, a disease where bones become weak and fragile because they contain less calcium.

Over the years my bones hav became weaker, I had a fall, put my hands out to save myself and broke my right humerus and left hand.

Yeovil Hospital gave me excellent care . They plated and pinned my arm and plated and pinned my hand it took a lot of support by the hospital but they mended me and a year later I was on Bakeoff. Each bake was a triumph, but I did drop a lot of things !!!

I have to take calcium supplements and have had infusions ( bit lie a blood transfusion) of a specific drug that helps attract calcium to my bones. Every other year I have a bone densitometry scan DXA for short. The scanner can see into bones and look at the structure, it can see Heather the bones are improved or deteriorating. This information guides the care needed by the patient.

When ai visited the hospital for my DXA scan I was told that there is a new piece of software  equipment that is able to look deeper into bones and aid the prediction of probable breaks however the hospital didn’t have the £7,000 to buy it.

I have never asked for anything for myself before I’m always fund raising for others and supporting many charities. I did the Great Wall of China Walk and I’m doing the Moonwalk in May for Prostate cancer and breast cancer.

I would like you to fund raise for this piece of equipment it will help me and the many other osteoporosis sufferers in Somerset. I chose to remember my Mum because she would have been so proud to have seen me baking on tv on Christmas Day.

I chose the photo for my page because I walked the Great Wall of China in fear of falling and breaking bones and in places where it was steep or slippery I came down on my bum!!
