Now what is this all about I can hear you say?, has Van gone crazy? !!! Well not quite!...(and dont forget, this is all in aid of the Prospect Hospice)
Most of you will know that I have played ice hockey for over 20 years. During that time it was my life, not only did it keep me fit and healthy, take me to places all over the world (Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria) but it helped me make lifelong friends that I will always treasure. Its hard to explain, but for me, that feeling I get as my skates touch that ice, well the best way to describe it is "like coming home". I have a love for skating and the ice that I think will stay with me forever.
Having opened my own Hair & Beauty salon with my sister - OMG Hair & Beauty 3 years ago, I had to make some personal sacrifices. The main one being stepping away from competitive hockey. I`ve missed it so much, but being so busy kind of camoflagued it. But as time has gone on, I have realised that you need a balance in life. Its just achieving it that is the hard thing!
In my job, I get to make people feel good about themselves, whether that be through having pretty nails, improved skin, a nice tan or healing their aching muscles through a good massage.
Some of our clients are facing huge challenges, that make our little worries in life insignificant. We have a number of ladies that have or have had cancer and I just want to do my own little bit to help. In fact, some of my team members have lost family members to cancer and my father in law and Nanna did too. These people are incredibly brave, amazingly strong, positive and an inspiration.
So....... On Sat Feb 19th this year, myself and my great great friend Debbie Palmer, whom I met on the ice, through hockey, are going to Finland to partake in an ice marathon, on a frozen canal! The full marathon is some 200 kilometres, but as this is our first time we aren`t sure what distance we will complete, but we hope as a minimum, its the 25km race (15 miles) http://icemarathon.kuls.fi/fim/l2
This marathon represents a big point in my life for me, in getting back some of my old fitness, feeling healthy and happy, reconnecting with the ice again and raising money for the Prospect Hospice, Wroughton, Swindon.
Prospect Hospice’s dedicated care last year reached more than 1,600 people living with cancer and other serious conditions in Swindon, north Wiltshire, and also in Fairford and Lechlade in Gloucestershire. They cared for people in their own homes, in care homes, at the Great Western Hospital and at the Hospice in Wroughton.
Heres a link to Debbies page, her story is a good one to read also, and shes raising money for heart research http://www.justgiving.com/Debbie-Palmer-Green

2 feb 2011 - a little update for you all! Training is going well. Lots of gym and rink work. I have managed 150 laps in one session so far, I need to be able to get up to 250 really, but its been an intense 6 weeks so far and I will just keep going and any lap is better than none! Hopefully on the day, the weather is kind, the scenery is great and me and Debbie help each other round, when Im sure I have a "wobbly moment!"
Its been fun trying to get the right gear to wear - goggles, full face mask, wind proof leggings etc. I am unrecognisable!
Thank you so far to all of you who have donated, your kindness is wonderful and I know that the prosect will spend the funds wisely. v xx
Update 21st Feb 2011
I am back from Finland and am really proud to say that I did the 40km marathon, which by all accounts, for a first time and in different skates, was very good! At times the temperature was reaching minus 28 outside, so it was a battle of mind and spirit to get the job done! I have uploaded some new piccies. Please please please donate just a couple of pounds to the hospice - I ama 77% there to my target!! van x
