We provide vital treatment, care & support to cancer patients and families in Wales

Story

Hi All,

My name is Paul Rogers and along with the following people who have very kindly offerred their support in joining me on this cycle challenge across Wales in May 2013, we are raising much needed funds for Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff :

Darren Hancock; Ken Stacey; Andy Martin; Paul Guy; Gareth Rees; Craig Hughes; Grant Hughes; Nick Hancock; Vince Hanly; Edrin Hanly; Chantelle Corns; James Cox; Craig Evans; Dave Powell; Paul Norman; Matthew Williams; Paul Phillips; Peter Llewellyn; Andrew Arentsen; Tom Crosby

We are cycling 456 km's from North to South Wales over 4 days for a new event called the "Velindre 456", which we hope will become an annual cycling fundraising event.  Our target this May is to raise £10,000.00!

My motivation behind this event is to give something back in a positive way after I sadly lost my mother to ovarian cancer in June 2012.  She fought a long and courageous battle and was incredibly positive and stoic all the way through her illness. I am blessed that her inspiration and "making a difference" approach to all who knew her in life has spurred me on to raise funds for the treatment of both inpatients and outpatients at Velindre, where they provide invaluable support to patients and families who are facing this horrific disease.

Velindre Cancer Centre is the largest non-surgical cancer Hospital in Wales providing Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy and other specialised anti-cancer treatments for over half the people diagnosed with cancer in Wales. More people survive cancer than ever before thanks to early detection and better treatments.

It is estimated that by 2015 there will be a 30% increase in the most common forms of cancer in Wales.

Between April 2009 and March 2010 Velindre Cancer Centre provided care, treatment and support for nearly 130,000 outpatients and day cases. Velindre Cancer Centre is the first Cancer Centre in Europe to have a totally integrated service for patients in most need. Their Active Support Unit, provides the highest standards of care and quality support. Velindre Cancer Centre has a fully integrated award winning Therapies team which includes Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Dietetics, Speech and Language Therapy, Lymphoedema and Complementary Therapies.

They have been providing care and support to cancer patients in South Wales for over 50 years. Every possible effort is made to ensure that each visit to Velindre is as comfortable as possible, and their experienced staff aim to provide high quality care to patients and their families. It is this commitment to high quality care which means that Velindre is widely regarded as being a Centre of Excellence.
