This is my Second time running The Great South Run, the 1st time was as a volunteer for the previous company I worked for, but this time I've decided to run it for the Diabetic charity, as not only do I have Diabetes (Type 1) but a friend of mine who was also a Diabetic (Type 1) sadly died suddenly in her sleep in her early 40's. I was lucky that she recognised the diabetic symptoms in me and told me to get to the doctors, and within less than 6hrs after having my bloods taken, I was admitted into hospital and diagnosed with diabetes.
The BUPA Great South Run in 2012 will take place on Sunday October 28 2012.
· It’s the world’s leading 10 mile running event
· Flat and fast route taking in the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard
· Broadcast live on Channel 5
· Bands on the Run en route to give a live music motivational boost
I ran in the Great South Run in 2011 – first time ever for doing a 10-mile route, I must have been lacking in sugar intake when the request (email) came through for volunteers to take part, as I jumped at the chance of tackling a distance I’ve never done before. 10-miles easy-peesy-lemon-squeezy I thought, as each year (for the last 4years) I’ve completed the Charity Race for Life 5K run; which I usually turn up on the day and run the distance without doing any training. Totally forgetting that 5K = 3.5miles, oh “sugar” (not my exact words) I thought when I realised that I had volunteered to take part, but would have to treble the distance I run....!
I took on the challenge, running 3.5miles 3 or 4 times a week; two weeks before the run I stepped the training up and once each week before the run, I managed to run 7miles. I thought to myself, even if I run 7miles on the day and walk the rest I would be happy, but on the day and with the adrenalin pumping and the crowds of people cheering you on, I achieved something I never thought I would ever achieve... I ran the 10miles without stopping; which was the first time ever that I had run 10miles, and out of over 28,000 entries I came 10199 and completing it in 01:42:39. J Totally buzzing at the end of the run and felt I could have gone on....!
So please dig deep, any amount is always appreciated and support my charity xx
