We provide specialist nurses to support families affected by dementia

Story

Thanks so much for having a read. 😁

So this year’s challenge is to Run the length of Britain. I plan to set off from John o groats on May the 24th and run 900miles (ish)to lands end. The aim is to run 30miles a day for 30 days. My usual support team in place to follow and take it in turns to look after me on the road. We plan to camp as well as use hotels along the way.

For this challenge I am raising funds for Dementia Uk.

What is dementia?

Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a range of progressive neurological disorders, that is, conditions affecting the brain. There are over 200 subtypes of dementia, but the five most common are: Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, frontotemporal dementia and mixed dementia. Some people may have a combination of different types of dementia and these are commonly called mixed dementia.

Dementia is a global concern but it is most often seen in wealthier countries, where people are likely to live into very old age. The Alzheimer’s Society (2014) reports there are over 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK today. Of these, approximately, 42,000 are people with young onset dementia, which affects people under the age of 65. As a person’s age increases, so does the risk of them developing dementia. It is estimated that the number of people living with dementia in the UK by 2025 will rise to over one million. Rates of diagnosis are improving but many people with dementia are thought to still be undiagnosed.

I wanted to do this challenge for Dementia because  I see how Dementia effects individuals and their families everyday in my job role in the care sector. I have worked in adult social care for over 10 years now and I have seen so many lives effected by dementia. I have seen the impact it has not only on the individual with dementia but for the families. It changes family relationships, leaves people socially isolated, and affects both the health and finances of family carers. All too often, family carers sacrifice their own well-being to ensure their loved one has the best care possible. If I can help raise awareness and some much needed funds to support research and more support for families living with dementia then this would be awesome. 😁

keep following and sharing  my training progress on social media, and please please donate if you can.

Thank you  🙌🏃‍♀️🇬🇧
