We foster and fund research to improve lives for people with nystagmus.

Story

On 28th October 2018 we will be abseiling in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park from the Orbits viewing platform at 262 ft (80 metres) to raise funds for pioneering nystagmus research at Moorfields Eye Hospital and University College London.

Nystagmus affects 1 in 1000 people, and is the most common form of visual impairment among children. It causes involuntary eye movement and poor vision. There is currently no cure and few people with the condition can drive.

I (Vicky) was born with nystagmus, often referred to as wobbly eyes. Despite the challenges it posed growing up, I was fortunate not to be treated any differently and did my best to pretend I could see like everyone else!

I am privileged to be a trustee of Nystagmus Network, a small but amazing charity offering support to people with the condition and funding much needed research. They produced a fantastic video, "Nystagmus: the way we see it" featuring Richard Osman from Pointless, explaining what it's like living with the condition. Please have a watch, especially if you've ever wondered why I've walked past you in the street without saying hello!

The abseil seemed a good opportunity to raise funds as well as a challenge to mark my half century - I'm quite a scaredy cat so this is definitely out of my comfort zone!

I'm delighted Richard has agreed to join me in the abseil as he has been my rock for the past 30 years and has never once complained about being the designated driver!
