Victoria Butler, Rob Green, Eve Whittington and John McHugh will be taking on a new adventure at half term by climbing the three peaks.
The Three Peaks
Challenge involves climbing the highest mountains in
Scotland, England and Wales (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon), one after
another – with an aim to complete the challenge within 3 Days.
The National Three
Peaks Challenge involves climbing the three highest peaks of Scotland, England
and Wales, often within 24 hours.
The total walking
distance is 23 miles (37km) and the total ascent is 3064 metres
(10,052ft)
BEN NEVIS
The highest of the three mountains is Ben Nevis standing at 4,413 ft. above
sea level. The famous peak, part of the Grampian Mountain range, was once a
huge active volcano, which exploded and collapsed in on itself millions of
years ago.
SCAFELL PIKE
The second peak of the Three Peaks Challenge is Scafell
Pike; the highest mountain in England at 3,209 ft. above sea level. Despite
being the lowest summit of all three peaks, it is arguably one of the hardest;
with a rocky steep ascent. However, Scafell Pike is situated within one of the
most stunning locations in the UK – the beautiful Lake District, surrounded by
tranquil lakes and awe-inspiring mountain ranges.
SNOWDON
Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, standing tall at 3,560 ft.
above sea level. The name Snowdon means ‘snow hill’ and snow can often be seen
covering parts of the mountain. Located in Snowdonia National Park, the
mountain is said to be the mythical resting place of the giant Rhita Gawr, who
was killed by King Arthur.
