Aspire Channel Relay Swim 2020 · 11 December 2019

Every two hours someone in the UK is paralysed by a spinal cord injury. It can happen to anyone at any time and no one is prepared for how it will change their life. Aspire is a national charity that provides practical help, supporting spinal cord injured people from injury to independence.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page

Next year I will be attempting to swim across the Channel as part of a relay team in aid of the charity Aspire.

Routed in tradition and as the Channel regulations dictate.. dress code is a swimming costume, hat and googles in what I consider very cold conditions!

To qualify for the swim, I need to be able to pass a two-hour certified cold water sea swim. Its fair to say I have completed a few challenges over the years, but I consider this to be the toughest yet: mentally enduring the cold for prolonged periods, is totally out of my comfort zone.

Aspire are a charity who support those with spinal cord injuries to reach independence through the provision of specialist equipment, housing opportunities and advocating for those with spinal injuries to live inclusive and fulfilling lives. We had the privilege of meeting Paula Craig (previously a sub 3 hour marathon runner, before being hit by a car in 2011 whilst triathlon training) her recovery journey was totally inspiring. Through strength, tenacity and the help of Aspire Paula to go on to complete and place in wheelchair marathons and return to her career .

If you would like to take pleasure in the thought of me acclimatising by taking cold baths, swimming in lakes and the sea whilst building up and hopefully completing the crossing, or if you would like to support this great charity, please donate, however small. Thanks so Vicki x
