London Marathon 2025 · 27 April 2025 ·

Every two hours someone in the UK is paralysed by a spinal cord injury. It can happen to anyone at any time and no one is prepared for how it will change their life. Aspire is a national charity that provides practical help, supporting spinal cord injured people from injury to independence.

Story

"Ever wondered what it's like to lose your mobility,"

In 2018 for 6 weeks I couldn't even sit down. Quite sobering what we take for granted. So next year in 2025 i will run the London marathon for a charity that supports people with spinal cord injuries.

If you can support me with any kind of donation I would really appreciate it. Anything at ALL!!

The Longer story is below

In 2018  Lianne and I decided it was the right time to get married.

As usual, prior to the wedding it usually entails a get-together of all your best friends usually involving lots of alcohol and partying.

For me I wanted to do it a little differently so skiing was on the menu.

24 Friends in Meribel (France) 6 weeks before my wedding day what could possibly go wrong??

So after a few sessions on dry slopes in the UK us non snow experts were somewhat ready to go at least.

As we arrived, you could already see the trip was going to be great for all 23  who had joined me in celebrating my future wedding that was just around the corner.

The first evening consisted of a steady amount of beers as we all wanted to be somewhat fresh for the first day. First morning came around blue skies and you could tell we was on for a memorable trip. Just how memorable for everyone, but particularly, me no one could anticipate. After the morning on some steady slopes everything was perfect. Until by accident as the group got separated I found myself on the top of a big run.

Taking my jacket off to put it in my bag I ventured down the slope quickly finding myself at the bottom as it flattened off but at a pretty fast pace. I slipped  and hit a snow cannon square on. The jacket that was placed in my backpack thankfully took the sting out of the impact.

Quite quickly it became apparent I was pretty injured. Mountain rescue quickly got me into a skidoo and off the mountain.

Within half an hour I was on an X-Ray table breaking the news to my wife to be Lianne that it was likely I had broken my back.

The rest is quite a blur but what I do know is the rest of the gang enjoyed the rest of the trip and I missed all of it. I spent a total of 7 days in two hospitals.

The final outtake was a fracture of my spine in two places L1 & L4 with additional management of L4 due to the severity of the break.

The whole experience was of course pretty traumatic and I know exactly how difficult life is without mobility as I had to spend 6 weeks without being able to sit down and move properly.

For this reason, I will be running the London Marathon for ASPIRE which provides practical help to people who have been paralyzed by spinal cord injury, supporting them from injury to independence.

I am pleased to tell everyone I managed to marry my beautiful wife and *walk* down the aisle just 6 weeks after my accident. With huge thanks to the medical team in Grenoble Hospital and all my friends and family who supported us both at this time.

Nearly 6 years on I intend to complete the London Marathon in April 2024

Please support me in reaching my goal
