Story
On 27th February I am retiring, for the last 5
years I have cycled to and from work and have become addicted to cycling! As a
result I have decided to set myself a challenge of cycling from home to London
visiting the places I have worked at and also people that I have done business
with over the years.
Having decided to do this it seemed the ideal opportunity to
raise money for a charity, the charity I have chosen is Maggies, for those of
you who do not know who they are or what they do Maggies was started by Maggie
Jencks, she herself was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1988 and then went into
remission until it returned in 1993 and she eventually died in 1995. As a
result of her illness and the subsequent treatment she received she formed very
firm ideas on the treatment and management of her illness. Out of this
situation Maggies Caring Centres were born to give people suffering with life
threatening diseases an oasis of calm within but not part of the hospital
environment, the first centre within the grounds of the Western General
Hospital in Edinburgh was opened in 1997, 2 years after her death but very much
as a result of the work she had put in to realise her dream. Fast forward to
2017 and there are now 22 centres throughout the Uk with several more under
construction
.
My plan is to set off for work as usual on the 27th
February and keep cycling until I reach London, visiting places where I have
worked and lived during my working career, calling in on friends and business
associates on the way. The route will cover some 800 miles and I plan to do it
over 14 days.
Thankyou
