Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and Vascular Dementia in August 2016 and life hasn't been the same since. As time goes on he becomes ever more vague, he's not sure how many people live in his house or if his grandchildren are children or adults. He goes to bed at 8pm and gets up at 10pm fully dressed, ready to start a new day. He can't remember to take his heart medication and is 100% reliant on Mum for everything. Every day brings new challenges for Mum who has been brought out of her retirement to become Dad's full time carer.
Alzheimer’s is a terminal illness like cancer, but it can go on indefinitely for many, many years. We are constantly astounded by the lack of support available to those with this disease, and those who care for them.
The Alzheimer’s Society offers invaluable help, support and research in to this debilitating disease. We'd like to see more awareness and support for those living with it, and their carers. By running the half marathon for The Alzheimer’s Society we hope to, in our own small way, make a difference. Not just for Dad and Mum - but for everyone living with Alzheimers.
