We recently observed “International Day of the Girl” which was instigated to increase awareness of the issues faced by girls around the world. Recent reports note that more than 62 million girls around the world have no access to education and, globally, one in four girls are married before age 18. These are staggering statistics. Everyone, whatever sex, colour or creed, should have access to education and this is something that we sometimes take for granted in the west.

I am a supporter of a small charity, Zest for Life, based in North Shropshire. It operates to support young people and their families in a remote rural area of west Kenya. They aim to offer young Kenyans hope through education and the prospect of a brighter future. They are particularly committed to helping improve the lives of girls and young women through access to education and training.  

This is something that I am passionate about and, as a result, I am taking part in the 5km part of Cook Medical Women’s Mini Marathon 2017 at UL Sunday 29^th October 2017.  I am very unfit so will be doing a mix of walking/jogging/running but I will get round.
