Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading dementia research charity. We’re striving for a cure, by revolutionising the way we treat, diagnose and prevent dementia.

Story

Thank you for checking out our fundraising page!

If you've come here you probably know one or both of us but here's a quick intro anyway: we are Carla and Gemma, two sisters originally from North Wales but currently living a fair few miles apart in Portsmouth (now North Wales again - hard to keep track) and London.

What are we fundraising for?

Over the past 10 years, we have seen our Grandad becoming increasingly impacted by dementia. It has sadly taken away many of the things he enjoyed previously, like going out on long walks, gardening and completing the daily newspaper crossword. It has also noticeably caused him frustration when struggling to recall words or events in a conversation, having difficulties with tasks that require multiple steps in order - such as making a cup of tea - and which many of us take for granted as we simply do them on "autopilot", and remembering who family members are. It has not only had a massive impact on him but also on the family who have had to learn the ins-and-outs of caring for a family member whilst also navigating the complexity of the social services and legal systems.

We are taking part in this event to raise awareness and funds for ARUK and also to go through this experience with others who may also be seeing these changes in their loved ones.

What do you get in return for your money?!

Aside from the warm fuzzy feeling of wellbeing that you will achieve from your act of kindness, you will also get to enjoy seeing us push our bodies and minds to their limits!

Over the course of the summer, we will be taking part in a number of events between us (including obstacle racing and numerous road and trail races from 5k to 100k+ ) - basically whatever we can fit in - all of which we hope will help this cause.

Schedule so far:

May 11: Rat Race Dirty Weekend (Obstacle Course Race): Gemma's first ever OCR undertaken in an (on reflection rather naïve) attempt to "ease herself back into running" after returning from injury and mental breakdown. Quite simply = Ouch!

June 8: Rat Race Runstock (laps of 5km trail course): 35km through rain and mud, fuelled by chips and chilli sauce.

June 14/15: Rat Race The Wall (69 mile ultra marathon over 2 days following Hadrian's Wall Path): Gemma's first ever ultra attempt = loved it but oh my gosh, I hate road running!

July 7: Race for Life, Southsea Common (5km): Carla completed with daughter Ella 🥰

July 21: Brighton Trailblazer (10km trail race) = I totally forgot when signing up for this that Brighton is actually pretty hilly.

August 3: Girls Get Fizzical (obstacle fun run) = completed with lots more bruises,  having to conquer fears and a swamp smell that will never leave us!

August 11: Salisbury 54321 (33km trail race) = oh wow. This was a tough one. A lot of aches and pains and burning sunshine but broken up with lots of nature.

August 16: Midnight2Midnight (multiple races over a 24-hour period)! Couldn't even kid myself that 24-hours would be possible. Even had my first ever DNF in my last loop. My body is beginning to struggle a bit....

September 8: New Forest Marathon = help me!

September 21: THE HIKE!!! 26 miles through the Peak District

Plus plenty of parkruns, long walks with the dogs for training and the odd last minute/spontaneous extra race entry when we get chance!

We hope you can help us to reach our target!
