Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My beautiful colleague, peer and friend Sarah was diagnosed with MND - Motor Neurone Disease -  last year.  This is a devastating, life limiting, life altering disease for which there is no cure, for which there is no real treatment.  I know Sarah won't mind me emphasising the following facts about this horrific disease:

MND is a fatal, rapidly progressing disease that affects the brain and spinal cord.

MND attacks the nerves that control movement so muscles no longer work. It does not usually affect the sense such as sight, sound, feeling etc

MND can leave people locked in a failing body, unable to move, talk, swallow and eventually breathe

MND kills a third of people within a year and more than half within two years of diagnosis

MND - THERE IS NO CURE

In Sarah's case, in the six months since diagnosis the disease has progressed quickly and already she has completely lost the ability to walk, to speak, to swallow.

I have always admired Sarah both professionally and personally.  I have worked closely alongside Sarah, particularly during our university's international student's arrivals and induction programme.  I looked up to her.   I have also admired how she realised that life is also about finding love and seeking fun.  To me, she achieved all of that over the last few years.

I can't even begin to imagine what then happens when you receive the devastating blow that you have MND.  It's a dirty, cruel and bloody awful disease.

There's not much tangible that I can actually do to remotely make this better.  But, I can show that I care by asking every one of her friends, associates, peers - by asking anyone in the Cardiff area who has been affected by MND - to join me on a Walk to D'Feet MND around Cardiff City Centre and appropriately, including Cardiff University Campus.

The TeamWatts-Peters Walk to D'Feet MND takes place on Saturday 28th March.   The Walk starts and ends at the VJ Gallery, Main Building, Park Place, Cardiff University, CF10 3AT.   Registration for adults is £10 (by donating to this page) and includes a t-shirt and certificate.  Under 16s go free and receive a certificate.   Registration starts from 9.30am and you can set off on the walk as soon as you have registered.  All walkers must have set off by 11am.

The walk is an easy, family friendly circular 5k walk through the centre of the city, and our landmarks, and the university campus.  It starts and ends in the VJ Gallery, Main Building.  To make it slightly more interesting there is a treasure hunt/Cardiff city quiz with answers to be found all along the route.  There will be a trophy on offer for the highest score recorded after all walkers have completed.

To register your interest please email me, Lesley Edge at walktodfeetmnd@gmail.com and I can confirm your place and give further details.

If you are unable to join us on this day, please feel free to show your support by donating.
