Story
I need your help!
In an error of judgement on a scale not seen since the day Achilles decided against wearing his steel heels in favour of the more fashionable, yet less practical sling back sandals, I have committed to running the Bristol Half Marathon.
Apart from learning all about PBs, fastleks and the role of lubricants in a non-contact sport, my training has taught me two things; first, I don’t like running and secondly, I have a remarkably low pain threshold for a former member of Dotty Althrope’s crack formation old-time ballroom team.
I’m putting myself through this ritual humiliation for an extraordinarily good cause: the National Star College. I have been incredibly fortunate to see first hand the truly inspirational work the College does for some of the most profoundly disabled young people in this country. It provides them with not only a first rate education, but also something which most of us take for granted: opportunity. The opportunity to realise their true potential, the opportunity to increase their independence and most of all, the opportunity to receive the very best preparation for the future challenges that this life will bring.
I don’t think I’ve ever been to a more inspiring, remarkable and happy place. I really can’t begin to describe the impact my first visit had on me: the total commitment of the staff, the sheer determination of the students and the overwhelming feeling of dedication and joy. It was a truly uplifting and humbling experience.
I know we can’t change the World, but the NSC can, with your help, change the world of the students in it’s care. Please give what you can.
Thanks for your support.
