We, at Papworth Trust provide support and opportunities for disabled people across East Anglia. Our services focus on vital support in housing, care, work and day opportunities as they are areas where we see disabled people experiencing the greatest disadvantage. www.papworthtrust.org.uk

Story

Me and my lovely Hairy Hubby are raising money for the Charity that have helped our friends Sarah and John and their boys so much.

In April last year Sarah fell and damaged her back and Spinal Cord. This left her Paralysed from the waist down with no Bladder or Bowel function.

She hit her head so hard her damaged nerves make her body repeatedly produce Brain Fluid, which means she has to go to the eye clinic every month for check-ups on her pressures.  Every 4-6 months she has a Lumbar Puncture to remove the Excess Fluid.  The pressure causes Headaches, Tinnitus, Eye and Sight Problems and much more.  It also causes 'Empty Sella Syndrome' which means her Pituitary Gland is Squashed and cant work.  The Pituitary Gland is the 'Control Centre' where all the Hormones etc are made so she has to have these in implant/tablet/steroid form, which causes weight gain.

Sarah was allowed home in the middle of June by Ambulance and transferred onto a hospital bed in her Lounge. She says the first weeks at home were the worst of her life because she was scared to be moved, washed or dressed by her carers and constantly lost her balance.

Because Sarah and John both worked before the accident and had a home with a mortgage they couldn't get any help from anywhere.  After a few months her Social Worker put her in touch with the Papworth Trust and from the first meeting they were amazing. They are in the process of adapting their home...It will take around 12-14 weeks and they have already done so much!!

Sarah's still living downstairs, in her hospital bed, having bed baths every day and having her hair washed in the kitchen sink but she is so positive about everything now!  She has a power chair so its easier to get around and she's so much more confident.  The Papworth Trust have already widened all the doors downstairs so Sarah's Wheelchair can fit through easily, they have made a room out of the Garage which will have a lift in it to take Sarah upstairs to sleep, and wash in the bathroom that they are turning into a Wetroom!

We really can't thank them enough for helping our friends get their home and family life back so please give as much as you can as it only takes a second for your life to change.

Make the most of every minute, Thank you so much, Amie & Niki xx
