Story
I am attempting to walk 500 miles in 6 weeks from 11 November to 23 December 2021 to raise money for the charity, 500 miles.
Having grown up in Malawi until 18 years of age, I was fortunate and privileged to grow up in a country surrounded by the friendly, inclusive and generous local population who helped raise me. The population of Malawi, often born into poverty, face considerable challenges to be educated and be provided opportunities to secure employment and social stability. When people in Malawi are born with deformities or lose their limbs or the use of their limbs due to accident, disease or poverty, many of them also lose their livelihoods, homes or families - and the most vulnerable even die.
500 miles was founded by Olivia Giles in 2007 and to date has funded and built two Prosthetic and Orthotic Clinics in Mzuzu and Lilongwe respectively. They are working with the Malawi Government’s Ministry of Health to give the affected Malawi population back their lives by making prosthetic and orthotic devices as accessible and as affordable as they can, not just today but on a long term and sustainable basis. If this fundraising event goes well and I'm successful in completing the 500 miles, I might be tempted into walking 500 miles more!!
Please support these Malawians who are in desperate need of help to enable them to live and prosper, as best as possible, as ably limbed Malawians do in their daily lives. Donate whatever you can. Zikomo Kwambiri.
