Our family is taking part in Ronald McDonalds inflatable 5K race in September to support the amazing work they do to help look after poorly children, as sometimes the best medical care isn’t close to home. 

Ronald McDonald House Charities UK provides free home away from home accommodation to families with children having treatment in hospital. 

Sadly we know this too well and have had to use Ronald McDonald services when our little brother, Ollie (“Weej”), was undergoing treatment at Birmingham Childrens Hospital. Although we only lived about an hour away from the hospital, one time during Weej’s chemo treatment, he had a check up appointment the following day and was too weak to travel home. Ronald McDonald provided our family with a room to stay which gave us one less thing to worry about and Weej some much needed time to rest. Everyone was so lovely and the room and facilities were exactly what we needed at that time. 

We were luckier than some as we lived close enough to the hospital which meant all of weejs siblings could visit everyday after school and still be together to share special memories, but for some families that isn’t an option. Ronald McDonald Houses not only offer families a place to stay; they also provide family activities, peer support, respite, and many other services. This means that families can be by their child's bedside in a matter of moments, whilst maintaining a degree of normal life with reduced emotional and financial strain.

Weej’s favourite food was McDonalds (nuggets specifically!!) so we thought we would do something fun to remember our brave hero Weej whilst raising money for this incredible charity at the same time.
