Story

We’re swimming to raise money for suicide awareness, that's Fran, H-J and John, Bishop of Worcester.

During the second lockdown, a family friend Fran knew, took his own life. He was talented, was young and excelling in his subject at university, had silver DofE, fought in Karate championships for Team England and had taught many children how to swim. He also received  a Merit of Honour Award in 2018 in Worcester Cathedral in recognition of his valuable contribution to the Royal Life Saving Society. He had a very loving family, and everything to live for...or so it seemed. For some reason, he decided that he did not want to live. We are left with many unanswered questions.

Sad statistics

In the UK, over 5500 people die each year through suicide.

The fundraising swim

Fran is swimming  1 mile for every 1,000 people plus an extra mile (so 6.5 miles). John, H-J and other members of the relay/support team will spur her on swimming a mile each.

5 common myths:

1. People who talk about suicide won’t really do it.

2. Anyone who tries to kill themselves must be crazy.

3. If someone is determined to kill themselves, nothing is going to stop them.

4. People who die by suicide are people who were unwilling to seek help.

5. Talking about suicide may give someone the idea.

Suicide prevention is everybody’s business

We can create hope through action. The money raised from this fundraising swimming event will go to MIND, a charity calling on the UK Government to urgently invest in a network of early support hubs across England and for a radical rethink into the way schools respond to young people, whose behaviour is a result of mental health problems and trauma.

This campaign is supported by Welfare for Healthcare, an initiative established in 2020 to respond to covid and the impact of the pandemic on the NHS. Its vision now is to support healthcare in its wider context, including mental health.
