We are the Welsh Ophthalmic Trainees and we are doing our part in fundraising for our nominated charity SightSavers International. They are a charity that fights avoidable blindness and promotes equal opportunities for visually impaired people.

To put things into perspective, there are 39 million blind people in the world, but 80 per cent of them can be cured or prevented. That's 31.2 million people that can be saved. They aim to help blind people see again, and prevent people from going blind wherever possible. SightSavers also fight to promote equality for people with poor sight as they often have inequal access to care, education, and employment.

Every one of our ambassadors is a healthcare staff working in Wales in Ophthalmology. We know first hand the impact eye disease can have on people. Working in the NHS in the UK, we are lucky that we are able to provide eye treatment that can prevent or cure blindness. Sometimes, it can be easy to take for granted an operation like cataract surgery which we perform in our theatres on a daily basis - this 20 minute procedure can restore someone's sight and yet there are millions of people around the world that still can not get access to this procedure. Healthcare should be a right, not a privilege.

Therefore we, as a group, want to do our part in raising money for such a noble cause and that would have a life changing impact on the people affected.

We aim to raise money by holding small events throughout the next month like cake sales, t-shirt sales, blind auctions, group activities, word of mouth donation, charity runs etc. Each one of our ambassadors will try to raise that little bit to reach our collective total!
