Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Vicky Bennett was a fiancée, daughter, sister, niece, friend and mother to be. On Thursday 29th June 2017 Vicky woke up feeling refreshed after a good night’s sleep, but just five minutes later was fighting for her life after suffering a cardiac arrest caused by a pulmonary embolism (PE). Vicky was resuscitated numerous times by her partner Stuart, and then air lifted to an intensive care unit in Bristol Royal Infirmary. Vic fought bravely for 4 days, but was sadly taken from her family and friends on Sunday 2nd July.

Vicky was aged just 33, and seemingly fit and healthy and expecting her first child when she was taken suddenly by a pulmonary embolism, the 2nd highest cause of sudden death in the UK. Watching her loved ones go through the pain of losing Vicky so suddenly was a harrowing experience, especially considering the warning signs  and preventative measures which mean she could still be with us today

To celebrate Vicky’s life, and raise money for a fantastic charity, a group of brave souls, including Stuart, have challenged themselves to undertake a unique charity event. The High Peaks and Sore Seats Challenge will be cycling through Wales from Holyhead to Vicky’s hometown of Ebbw Vale, and hiking the 3 highest peaks in the country all in the space of three days.

We will be raising money for Thrombosis UK, a registered UK charity (Registered Charity No. 1090540), where your donation will fund:

  • Research programmes
  • Awareness Campaigns
  • Educate Professionals and the Public

Did you know?

  • Up to 1 on every 1000 are affected by thrombosis in the UK each year
  • 1 in every 10 people who suffer a pulmonary embolism will die if not treated
  • 1 in every 1000 pregnant women suffers thrombosis, which can lead to related long term health problems.

Vicky loved to cycle her family can’t think of a better way to celebrate her life.

Please give generously for this worthy cause, and help us save other families the devastation that a PE or DVT can cause. You can donate via our Just Giving page, ‘High Peaks and Sore Seats’.

We thank anyone who can support us in this cause, and if you want to find out about how we are doing on our training please follow us on Facebook, or Jon’s blog ‘One Man & His Cog’. Some of the group are experienced cyclists and hikers; others are just starting out so it’s going to be quite a journey.

There are opportunities to corporately sponsor the event, which will include cycling kit and walking apparel to be worn throughout all training over the next year, promotional events, the Velothon Wales 2018, and during the full 3 day event itself. If you can help please get in touch with:
