Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page in memory of Wendy Marie Chana, a loving Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother, Auntie, Grandmother and a friend to many, who fought an unwanted battle against an incurable disease.
The Disease – Motor Neurone Disease (MND)
Motor neurone disease (MND) is a fatal, rapidly progressing neurological disease. It attacks the nerves that control movement (motor neurones) so that muscles no longer work.
Motor neurones control important muscle activity such as gripping, walking, speaking, swallowing and breathing. As these nerves are attacked, messages gradually stop reaching muscles. This initially leads to weakness and wasting and then, eventually, severe paralysis and breathing difficulties.
Mental abilities and senses are not usually affected, and Wendy still remained aware, smiling and happy to be with, and to see, family and friends despite her deteriorating physical condition.
The Challenge – Marathon Walk (26.2 Miles)
Wendy was a keen walking enthusiast, always on her feet, whether it was at work doing 14 hour shifts at the Hospital, or hiking in the Lake District with her Husband Tony and Maddie (the Westie). But her favourite type of walking was up and down the beaches of Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
Once diagnosed with MND in October 2022, Wendy’s love for walking, amongst other activities was instantaneously taken from her.
Therefore, on Sunday 26 March 2023, family and friends closest to Wendy will be walking a marathon (26.2 miles) throughout West Lancashire, Southport and Formby, visiting several places of interest to Wendy, her family and friends in her memory.
The Charity – Queenscourt Hospice
Wendy spent her last days in comfort with her family at the Queenscourt Hospice before she sadly passed away peacefully on Monday 19 December 2022, aged 60.
Queenscourt Hospice is our local charity that provides support for approximately 235,000 people of West Lancashire, Southport and Formby. They provides access to Specialist Palliative Care via the Inpatient Unit or as an Outpatient.
Queenscourt has an holistic approach to Palliative Care to ensure patients have their physical, psychological, spiritual and social care needs assessed, and to provide access to multi-professional Health Care Team for specialist support.
The cost to Queenscourt to provide such comprehensive care is £444 per hour which is exceptionally high considering the Queenscourt receives less than 20% of its funding from the NHS.
Your kind support and donations will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you 🫶🏽
