Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

For those of you who dont know us.....

I (the Duffers or duff part of the team) was diagnosed with myeloma in December 2010 at the age of 49.  Myeloma is a cancer of the bone marrow, a type of blood cancer.  It is fairly rare affecting about 4000 people a year in the UK. It is treatable but not curable at present. Life expectancy is improving and longer periods of remission are being obtained through new treatments discovered through research and Myeloma UK is the only charity in the UK specifically dealing with Myeloma and raises funds for research, education and patient information.

My motivation for raising money for Myeloma UK is completely self interested as I have found Myeloma UK to be a great support and resource. It is a small enough charity to be personal but big enough to make a difference.  Your donations will enable Myeloma UK to continue be a lifeline to people like me with Myeloma. I may shortly be participating in a clinical trial funded by Myeloma UK to try a newer drug not currently available.

Unfortunately I am now relapsing after enjoying a great drug free quality of life for the last 18 months since my stem cell transplant. I did the Manchester 10k run last year for Myeloma UK but wanted to take on a bigger challenge this year and inspired by the Olympics 2012 and because I am probably quite mad I decided on a Triathlon. That was before I discovered I am relapsing!  I will be starting treatment shortly and who knows what the future will bring but in the meantime I am totally doing it and in glorious lycra too!

Despite applying serious pressure on my friends to take part with me, only one was also mad enough to rise to the challenge, that is the Rigby part of the team. Ruth lives in Nottingham and we have been friends for a long time. She is an aspiring fitness fanatic and loves all the technical gear and there is a lot of it for a triathlon!  She will certainly look the part and can talk the talk but can she walk the walk? I hope so! Our aim is to complete the course and avoid being rescued from the water in the dark when everyone else has gone home!

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Latest news

Hi everyone, since I wrote my story for this page, unfortunately my relapse has progressed and I will be starting chemotherapy shortly which means I wont be able to manage all three sections of the triathlon. However I am pleased to announce the very exciting news that I have recruited friends Caroline Pinney (an experienced open water swimmer who swims like a fish) to do the swim section and Poddy Peerman (a superb endurance runner) to do the run section and I will hopefully manage to do the bike section in the middle so we are entering as a relay team.  Ruth Rigby will still be doing the event as an individual and is in serious training as there is ONLY TWO WEEKS TO GO!!

Thanks to everyone that has donated so far. I hope you'll understand why I cant do all 3 sections and for those that haven't donated please give what you can to this great cause by sponsoring us ( and check out the new photos!)
