West Highland Way · 15 August 2021
The West Highland Way is a linear long distance route in Scotland. The 96 miles of rough terrain and hill climbs start at Milngavie (north of Glasgow) and finish in Fort William in the Scottish highlands. We will be carrying out the walk over 8 days roughing it out under the stars during August. This 8 day period will allow us to enjoy the great scenes that Scotland has to offer and also give us time to reflect on our lives to appreciate everything we have which we take for granted daily. We hope this journey will open our hearts and minds and we return with stories and tales to share with our friends and family, it will be a journey to remember forever. We will be ditching all means of technology for the walk and relying on map reading and intuition alone which will be challenging enough. We are all guilty of taking advantage of technology recently and we wouldn’t go without it but we never stop to think how fortunate we are to have it. For this reason, we are looking to raise funds for Special Effect, a charity who help people with disabilities with all technology needs from gaming to browsing the net. These guys cover it all to bring a smiles to the faces of thousands every year.
Special Effect recently helped Rich’s little girl with all her gaming needs so she can enjoy playing with her siblings...
“Lily is 7, she has cerebral palsy in her right side and hypermobility. She’s always really wanted to play on games but struggled with the controllers due to her restricted mobility. We found SpecialEffect and had a meeting with them and they have kindly sent us adapted controllers enabling Lily to join in with games and play on the Nintendo switch - which she is so happy about. We can’t thank them enough and hope to raise lots of money for such an amazing charity.” - Rich & Emma.
Please help us raise funds for Special Effect, a charity that has found a big place in our hearts and no doubt yours too.
Here’s a short section to give you all an idea of how they help the less fortunate. Please take a couple of minutes out of your day to read the following information and please watch the inspirational videos attached...
SpecialEffect enable severely disabled people to use technology to play video games. Harnessing whichever part(s) of their body that work best, SpecialEffect take time to understand and adapt technology to their very individual needs – whether that be chin, foot, finger, toe, ankle, knee or head control – or all of those, we’ll find a way. It’s so important that everyone can join in with family, friends and the gaming community, to be included and not left out. All too often a disability can leave a person ‘on the sidelines’, unable to take part and experience all the fun and inclusion that we know games can bring. Being included hugely benefits mental wellbeing and quality of life – and brings some much needed FUN! Our aim is to enable anyone who needs our support, to be able to play the games they want to play. We’re a service for life so as and when things need to be adapted or altered (due to a progressive condition where needs change such as muscular dystrophy or spinal muscular atrophy where muscles weaken over time), and of course when new games are released or the person is ready to take on their next challenge or would like to try something new to keep their interest up, SpecialEffect are there to help.
Tom was an incredible young man we helped & he wrote simply: ‘Thank you for giving me my life back.’ Sadly Tom died a while ago, but he was kept happily gaming right up to the very night before he passed away. His family are now good friends of SpecialEffect. https://www.dropbox.com/s/uymuwdi6dn51h4q/Tom_HD.mp4?dl=0
