Story

Hey everybody time is ticking on for the Dublin Marathon and myself and Eugene are training hard..well as hard as we can!! We really do appreciate any support that you can give to the Wicklow Hospice it makes the miles seem not quite so hard!! especially the last 6!! See below for an update on where the Wicklow Hospice is currently at and why we choose the Wicklow Hospice as our charity of choice.

Kind regards Eugene and Mary x

1. Cost to build the Hospice including VAT is €9m. Banked from wonderful fundraising is €4m, Government pledged €1.25m bringing us up to €5.25m which allows us to secure a bank loan to bridge the gap of the full cost to build and the fundraising. We need fundraising to pay of the bank loan.

2. Why take out the bank loan? The full capital cost needed to be raised  before the build could start. Hopefully with the continued wonderful fundraising the Wicklow Hospice won't need to draw down the loan.

3. Do we need a Hospice? YES WE DO. Our closest Hospice is in Blackrock and is very often full to capacity therefore people with life ending illness spend their last days in a General Hospital. This is not the specialist care they deserve. A hospice will also look after the family and friends of the patient. No travelling on the N11 in traffic up to Dublin. Wicklow has no place to either be born or die!! this is going to change and in September 2019 we will have a 15 bed Hospice for the People of Co Wicklow under the wonderful guidance of Our Lady's Harold's Cross.

4. What is a Hospice? A hospice is a medical facility for people who are suffering from a life ending illness. It is not a nursing home. Patients can go in for respite care ie have a week or two under medical supervision come home and may go back in again when they are closer to the end of their illness. Palliative care is also provided where nurses will come to the patients home to administer care and to also help the patient and the family at the end of life stage.

What do we ask of our friends and family? We ask for your support by donating to our page, any amount makes a wonderful difference, the pennies make the pounds. The support of everybody from my Lap of the Map was staggering and I know once again I am asking, but this time I have Eugene alongside me and we are both so very grateful for the ongoing support of our family and friends over the years.

Should anybody have any queries regarding the Wicklow Hospice please do contact Sinead on 0870954137 sinead@wicklowhospice.ie who will answer any questions that myself and Eugene can't answer.

So now on with the training!!!! Lace up the runners and off we go xx
