Event: Velo Birmingham 2017, on 24 September 2017
Following the devastating news of Carl Ikeme's leukaemia diagnosis, Wolverhampton Wanderers' chosen charity for all funds raised in support of the club's number 1 goalkeeper will be Cure Leukaemia.

Story

Being a life-long Wolves fan, I was deeply moved by the news that our #1 goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme, was diagnosed with acute leukaemia during a routine pre-season blood test at the age of 31 and in the prime of his life. It's a cruel, cruel disease that really can strike anyone at anytime.

In support of Carl, and for Cure Leukaemia, I am hoping to raise money by taking on the biggest bike ride I've ever attempted - the 100 mile Velo Birmingham.

This will be a huge challenge for me being a relative newcomer to distance cycling, but I can think of no better way to show support and solidarity with the Wolves family than pushing my own limits in order to raise money for such a brilliant cause that has touched us all.

Cure Leukaemia (CL) helps to save lives and hasten global progress towards eradicating blood cancer within the next 30 years. CL supports the internationally renowned Centre for Clinical Haematology in Birmingham and a network of specialist research nurses across the UK who administer often world first and potentially life-saving clinical trials to leukaemia patients who have exhausted standard treatments. In 2017, Cure Leukaemia is committed to raising an additional £1m to double the Centre's capacity for patients, world first trials & nurses.

Cure Leukaemia fund research nurses at 15 hospitals across the UK. These roles form the Trials Acceleration Programme (TAP) network giving patients, from a catchment area of 30m, access to potentially life-saving treatments through clinical trials, with plans to fund a paediatric network on the way.
