About Will's Marathon Challenege:
In preparation for a much bigger goal, Will is planning to take part in the following:
- Run to the Beat Half Marathon, 26th September 2010
- The ING New York City Marathon, 7th November 2010*
- The Adidas Silverstone Half Marathon, 6th March 2011
- The Reading Half Marathon, 20th March 2011
- The Virgin London Marathon, 17th April 2011
- The Edinburgh Marathon, 22nd May 2011
*The New York Marathon is what triggered this whole event. It marks the 1st anniversary of Will’s mother, Lennie, who lost her long and courageous battle on the 7th November 2009. With his father, Raymond and girlfriend, Meg as support on race day - WIll hopes that this will provide a distraction on this otherwise difficult day.
About The Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign - Fund 260
Will’s mother, Lennie, lost her long and courageous battle on the 7th November 2009 after battling with secondary breast cancer since her diagnosis in 2002. Lennie’s oncologist for the last seven years was Professor Ian Smith (or Prof as mum called him for 5 years), Head of the Breast Unit and Professor of Cancer Medicine at the Royal Marsden Hospital where Lennie was treated. The specified Fund 260 is his ‘Research Fund’ which supports the training of a specialist research team and their work, which directly benefits what he can do for his patients like Lennie, who asked us to support it.
Below is a paragraph from Prof. Smith:
“The money will be used to help our research into developing new and more effective forms of treatment against breast cancer. We are developing techniques which enable us to study the molecular changes which take place in individual tumours during treatment. This should allow us to target specific treatments for each individual patient. All this requires funding so that we can train specialist doctors and nurses to carry out this pain-staking research.”
