Story

I am doing a wing walk in May 2018 (crazy I know!!) to try and raise as much money as possible to give something back to all the amazing people and companies that helped myself, my wife and my twin daughters through the worst time of our lives. Cue sad story...

Jessica & I found out that we were expecting identical twin girls in May last year, very unexpected but we were excited all the same! Things went wrong from the start, Jessica developed Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome, a condition where one twin takes too much and one has too little, a potentially fatal disease if not intervened with. Unfortunately things did not improve on there own and Jessica needed surgery in August to split her placenta in 2, in hope of giving each of our girls their own blood and nutrient supply. All seemed well until October 23rd, the fateful day when at 30+1 weeks, the girls needed to be delivered via emergency C-Section at Lincoln County Hospital due to one of our precious girls struggling. Sadly, Eden, our donor twin, passed away a mere 4 hours after birth, very very unexpectedly. To add insult to injury, our surviving twin Olivia was extremely poorly and had to be transferred to Jessops' Wing in Sheffield immediately for intensive treatment and care. It was here where she fought tooth and nail for her life. From a bleed on her brain to various blood transfusions, she was dealt with blow after blow. The staff at Jessops quite literally saved Olivia's life, without them we would have lost both of our girls without a doubt. From their sheer compassion to knowledge, every single person we encountered went above and beyond, and made the worst time of our lives that tiny bit more bearable. They provided us with a room on the ward, enabling us to stay in Sheffield for the whole of her stay, with kitchen and bathroom facilities. Without this we would have had to travel from Lincoln to Sheffield daily, and for that we are eternally grateful. These rooms are entirely funded by donations, and I would hate for a family not to have this opportunity in their darkest hours.

Anything raised past our current target will go to the charity, Remember My Baby. Given details via Jessops, they put us in contact with a lovely lady from RMB who volunteered to take photos of our girls together, something that in time we have come to treasure. She did this with such kindness and care, and the end result was phenomenal. This sheer random act of kindness has stayed with us and has enabled us to have priceless images of our girls together, just like they should have always been, all free of charge. She travelled to Jessop's and spent a considerable amount of time listening to us, comforting us and making the whole process as nice as possible, and for that we are eternally grateful.

We also aim to raise money for the Neonatal Unity at Lincoln County Hospital. Although this is where everything happened, they delivered the girls within 20 minutes of Jessica's scan, which is no mean feat. They successfully revived both girls and proceeded to treat them as best as they could. Without their quick thinking and intervention we would have lost both. Not to mention the care that Olivia received once she was transferred back from Sheffield. This, again, was outstanding. Not only did they remember us all, they treated us with such care and absolute kindness, every single member of staff spoke of, and knew Eden's name, a small but unforgettable gesture.

While we cannot bring Eden back, as a family we would like to be able to give something back to each and every person who helped along the way and will continue to do so in the future, to hopefully keep the name of Eden May Burton alive.
