Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I’ve been furloughed again for June, so want to use my time to help others who have been affected by lockdown and self isolation. I’m raising money for the Samaritans of Shrewsbury who provide such valuable support and someone to talk to. I’m also riding in memory of my good friend Jo Nichols.

I’ve only started road biking last month but I’ve set myself the challenge of cycling the equivalent distance from Lands’ End to John O’Groats (LEJOG) - 874 miles(!) - over the 30 days of June. This works out at 29.1 miles per day....every day of June. I’ll be riding around the local area but trying to create some of the daily challenges of the official route!

As I’ve not done a challenge like this before, I’d love your support to help spur me on each day to keep pedalling! Thank you for keeping me motivated!

Day 30 🌨🚴‍♀️ 24.5 miles = 876.5 miles total. 🎉 I’ve made it to John O’Groats!! A lovely team of supporters joined the afternoon ride around the north Shropshire  lanes ending in pouring rain (felt more like northern Scotland!)! A glass of 🍾 went down well to conclude the ride. Over £3200 raised (& more with gift aid) - a huge thank you to all my supporters & to Radio Shropshire for  raising awareness yesterday afternoon with my interview (not that I can listen to it 😂!).. So that’s 648 potentially life-saving calls for Samaritans Shrewsbury! THANK YOU!  Think I might have the day off tomorrow! Xx

Day 29 💨🚴‍♀️ 26.3 miles = 852 total. Felt better today after more rest & with a support team of Seb Cooley & Henry Farmer - thanks to you both. The wind was gusty but the route kept us mostly out of its bite. I’m now in Thirsk and there must be signs for John O’Groats! Looking forward to my last ride of the trip tomorrow - hopefully in less blustery conditions. Also hoping for a peloton of supporters! I’m wondering whether I dare to hope that I could get to £3000, which would mean an incredible 600 potentially lifesaving calls to Samaritans covered..thank you to all my supporters! Xx

Day 28 💨🚴‍♀️ 12.8 miles = 825.7 total. Very little in the tank today - accentuated by the strong, gusty wind. I’ve therefore used up the rest of my banked miles. Just 50 miles to go over two days...Thinking of my friend - bruised & sore 💕.. and of Jo and of all In need. x

Day 27 🌦🚴‍♀️ 27.8 miles = 812 total. I’m nearly there! But the fantastic news is that I’ve raised over £3 per mile and now 538 calls to Samaritans are fubded to help those in need! However, there was a distressful end to the ride as one of my two friends who came out to support me went over her handlebars and was badly grazed & cut. Thankfully she is ok having been seen at A & E but obviously shaken & sore. Sending lots of love to her.. xx.

Day 26 ☀️🚴‍♀️ 28.7 miles = 785 total. An afternoon ride via Coedway, Westbury, Edge etc  with Ben  Pocock. - thanks for joining me! Just 100 miles to go & still hoping to get some more lifesaving phone calls funds in..

Day 25 ☀️🚴‍♀️ 34.22 miles = 756 total. A pretty ride through the villages of north Shropshire with Fanella (with a few little discussions re which way to go - as seen in the Strava route map). 5 days to go..

Day 24 ☀️🚴‍♀️ 27.5 miles (Strava diddled me of a mile - kept stopping!) = 722 total. I’m at Tomatin, just north of Avemore. Nilou came for a stint with our pal, Caroline, on her new, rather pretty, road bike!  Seriously hot today!

Day 23 🌤🚴‍♀️ 33.55 miles = 694.59 total. You can see from the Strava update that there was a bit of a middle at one point! Lovely ride with Nilou Hughes & Jon Davies to meet another friend on an electric bike in Plealey. I’m feeling positive as getting towards John O’’Groats now! There’s an article in the Shropshire Star today too! Hopefully more ££ for Samaritans!

Day 22 ⛅️🚴‍♀️ 26.4 miles (mostly up hill, I’m sure!) = 661 total. Lovely scenic ride though south Shropshire - Cardington, Harley, Cound. The most difficult ride I’ve done so far in terms of elevation. I was joined by lovely Georgie Eyre who, I can tell, is more used to those hills than I am! She also knew the way when my Kermoot companion got stuck- thanks Georgie. Scotland is hard work!

Day 21 🌦🚴‍♀️ 29.6 miles = 634.6 total. I’m on my way to  Perth. My sister Emma and her partner, Duncan, joined myself and James. Couple of squeaky showers  but otherwise good going.

Day 20 ⛅️ 🚴‍♀️ 325 miles = 605  miles total. Im near Loch Leven now ... A lovely contrast to yesterday & considerably more enjoyable, especially as a friend came along to support me - thank you Vic Everall!  I’m thrilled that we are still raising much needed funds to help those who need a listening ear - thank you to my sponsors - the thigh burn is literally paying off.. x

Day 19: ☔️☔️☔️💨🚴‍♀️ 17.7 miles  = 572 miles. I can’t deny it- it was a horrid ride! Pouring rain, blowy, huge puddles (see photo!), chain off, water bottle in dirty puddle! Therefore I had to cut it short & use some banked miles again. Hopefully, you will take pity on me & sponsor me to help the Samaritans - help to save lives.. Thanks to all my sponsors to date, as usual. X

Day 18: 12.6 miles 🚴‍♀️ in ☔️☔️☔️☔️One thing to return in the rain; another to have to start and finish in it! Thankful for the extra miles I’ve banked. Now near Biggar; Livingston is my destination tomorrow.

Day 17 of 30.5 miles 🚴‍♀️👍. Total now 542 miles & up through Scotland now.. So close to the 400 calls target - please share & help 400 people make maybe a lifesaving call. Thank you. Thanks to Fenella Nicholas & Nilou Hughes for company today.. x

Samaritans LEGOG  Day 16 🚴‍♀️👍29.8 mi  miles = 511.55 total. I’m into Scotland now 🎉, nearing Lockerbie. So lucky that the forecast was wrong again so ⛅️ was brilliant! Grateful to Ben Pocock for plotting the route & keeping me company all the way . Nice to meet his mate Steve too!  So grateful for the sponsorship still coming in - can we get to 400 phone calls @ £5 each? 400 mothers/ fathers/ sons/ daughters/ sisters / brothers - let’s try to help as many as we can.. thank you.. x

Day 15 of raising ££ for Samaritans! I’m now virtually at Carlisle having Done 30.5 miles today, taking me to 481 total (out of 874). 15 days done; 15 to go  🚴‍♀️🎉

Day 14 🚴‍♀️👍🌤 34.9 miles = 451 total miles meaning I’ve made it on my Lands’ End to John O’Groats (LEJOG) route to Grasmere & over half the mileage to John O’Groats! 🎉 Thanks to Harriet PW for joining us for a stint on her (very heavy!) bicycle! !

Day 13 🚴‍♀️👍🌤 29 miles = 416 total. 84 miles to Gretna Green ! Approaching  half way.; makes you realise how big Scotland is! Company from tech support today (aka lovely hubby). Thankfully the weather forecast changed!

Day 12 🚴‍♀️👍⛅️ 32.6 miles = 386 total - I’m heading towards Chorley now. Great company on my ride today with the gals - thank you 😊. I’m getting towards that £2 per mile target & am very grateful for the £ support - thank you. I’m still pedalling so still hoping to get some more ££ in..

Day 11 🚴‍♀️👍☔️☔️☔️ 25.5 miles =353 total. The wettest ride I’ve ever done! Thankfully only from 12 miles onwards! Grateful to have banked some miles so kept it a little shorter today but no stopping for snacks etc. Getting towards £2 per mile raised- thank you 🙏 everyone who has supported me; maybe the soggy bum/ feet etc. is worth a few quid?! 😂

Day 10 🚴‍♀️👍 ⛅️ 36.96 miles = 328 total. £1448 - amazing total, thank you supporters! Still hoping for more! Hey, I’m nearly at Whitchurch! Hope I had some virtual waves on my route through?! 😃 it’s not great looking at the map north woods - long way to go still! However, I’m eating plenty to keep myself fuelled up & ready for the next leg. Had some company from two gals today on a loop from Withington to Atcham - thank you! I cycled route 81 from town to Withington for the first time - recommend that. Thanks all. Xx

Day 9 🚴‍♀️👍 33 miles. = 291 total. I’m now around the Ludlow area, believe it or not! Lucky with the weather again. Thanks to everyone who has donated - I’m very grateful for your support. I hope my continued efforts help bring in some more donations to help provide this amazing service that the Samaritans offer.

Day 8 LEJOG 🚴‍♀️👍⛅️ 34 miles = 258 total. Good ride around Kinnerley, Crew Green, Westbury. I’m now past Bath (sadly the spa was shut!), and crossing the Severn Bridge. Great to be heading up north.. Thank you  for supporting me - we are getting towards £2 per mile which would be brilliant. Xx

Day 7 LEGOG 🚴‍♀️👍⛅️ 30.6 miles = 224. Tech support again came to give online support! Ride from Prees for a different perspective. I’m raising my target to at least £2 per mile - please share & help me fulfil it, but mostly help those who really are in need by supporting Samaritans Shrewsbury - thank you xx

Day 6 🚴‍♀️👍 🌬☔️ 31.5 miles = 193.4 total. Company today to Ellesmere from hubby 😄. We dodged most of the showers pretty well & the lovely Shropshire hedgerows helped to reduce the impact of the gusty wind a little.

Day 5 🚴‍♀️👍🌬 34.4 miles = 161.9 total.  Lucky to miss most of the rain though the gusty winds made it difficult to pedal in some parts; tried to stick to the smaller lanes therefore. So pleased to see I have surpassed my target and now hoping to get to £2 for every mile I pedal for Samaritans Shropshire! Thanks for all the generous donations to date. Xx

Day 4 👍🚴‍♀️☁️32.9 miles = 127.5 miles total. Luckily stayed dry today & a had a supporter ride with me - nice to have company thank you Nilou!

Day 3 👍🚴‍♀️☔️ 29.7 miles = total 94.6 miles, for Shropshire Samaritans.  Considerably colder than yesterday and rainy, but happy to say, all fine. I’ll upload the photo of my return in the hope it will encourage some more £ for Samaritans. Thanks all xx

Day 2 🚴‍♀️👍35 miles. Total 64.5 miles, for Samaritans Shropshire. Blessed with beautiful weather again, I had a lovely treat of ginger ice cream from the wonderful Maynard’s Farm Shop at Prees. I meandered there and back via Loppinton & Nonerley. Lovely country lanes. I know the rain is coming but thoughts of those in need and our friend, lovely Jo Nichols, will keep me going, have no fear.. thanks again to all. Xx

Day 1 🚴‍♀️👍. Not a bad time for me 2 hours 13 minutes to do just over 29 miles. I’m not going to break any speed records! I tried to use a route I had planned on Strava, only to find out it doesn’t talk to you like google maps! The 7 ‘P’s spring to mind! I therefore followed my nose & a lovely route up to Hordley via Yeaton, Burlton, then back via Weston Lullingfields & Ruyton XI Towns.
Thanks so much for your support! XX
