Sheffield Poem-a-thon for Refugees and Asylum Seekers · 2 April 2016

ASSIST works with people in Sheffield who have been refused asylum in the UK. They are evicted from their Home Office accommodation and forced into destitution. We provide our clients with stable, dignified accommodation, regular financial support and a person-centred casework service.

Story

We are poets from the Sheffield Women's Conversation Club, some of us refugees and asylum-seekers. Some of us have been supported by ASSIST through hard times of homelessness and despair. We are writing poems specially for the Poem-a-thon and will read them in different languages including Sinhalese, Amharic and Farsi with English translations. Because people matter, because poetry matters, because human rights matter.

Together with nearly 50 other poets we'll be reading on Saturday 2nd April at the Art House, in a relay of words from 10 am to 6 pm. Sponsor us, cheer us on, and spread the word.
