Story

Thanks for visiting my fund raising page to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support in Memory of my mum Kathleen Ann Minns who died from cancer age 47 on June 10 1996and the increasing number of friends and family who have lived with or are living with and beyond cancer. No One Should Face Cancer Alone. Without fundraising and voluntary donations, Macmillan’s services would not exist.

I am being joined on this my 6th trek by Sue who has been involved in my fundraising efforts since I signed up in March 2008 to trek the Inca trail after extensive surgery on my left knee. Sue has admired from afar the efforts and determination of myself and my fellow trekkers over the last 5 years and has decided to climb mountains with me so others don’t have to. Our Target is £10,000

Macmillan has been a part of my life for the last 24 years after my Mum was diagnosed with breast Cancer in 1989. Kathleen Ann lost her life 7 years later at 47. At the time I did a sponsored head shave and raised £300 for the Macmillan Hospice that looked after her. 12 years later I set myself a challenge to raise £20k by 2016 that target has been blown and my new target £47k by the 10th June 2016 to commemorate mums 20th anniversary is now on the table. So far, on the date of publishing this page my supporters have helped me raise an a amazing £26,660........ 47 is so in reach, please give what you can.

After seeing increasing numbers of close friends and family being diagnosed with cancer, 2009 saw myself leavening the comfort of my own home for South America. This challenge changed my life forever. While I was away trekking the Inca Trail to the Lost City of Machu Picchu in Peru I discovered things about myself that I never knew existed by pushing my comfort levels to the maximum mentally and physically. The sense of achievement and peace made me realise that prior to this trip I was bogged down with work and had been dwelling on small, comparatively unimportant things. The trek helped me discover who I really was and what I could be and achieve for others.

2009 I trekked the Inca Trial in Peru to the lost city of Machu Picchu for what would have been my mum’s 60th birthday year.

January 25th 2011 I reached 5895m above sea level at the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

November 2011 with 42 other people I trekked the ancient Bedouin trails of Jordan from Dana to the Lost City of Petra.

September 2012 again with 40 + people I walked a section of the Great Wall of China.

March 2013 with an incredible bunch of inspirational people, walked coast to coast in Cuba from Havana to Trinidad.

Doing these treks and meeting the amazing people who have also signed up to walk deserts and climb mountains to push themselves through tough times so others don’t have to, and listening to their stories of why they have signed up as well constantly reminds me of how important Macmillan Cancer Support is to people, and why these treks to raise awareness and funds for the charity are so important, so the services provided by Macmillan can continue to improve the lives of people living with and beyond cancer in the UK TODAY! Without fundraising Macmillan’s services would not exist.

Macmillan aim to reach everyone affected by cancer and that is 1 in 3 of us!
