Caudwell children take 25 children with life limited / life threatening conditions, to Florida, for a once in a life time 'dream trip'. Unlike many wish trips, Caudwell take a whole team of amazing medics, who are on call 24/7 to support the families.
My (nick) name is Wonky and I'm 10yrs old, and I was selected for Destination Dreams 2016 when I was 9yrs old. I managed to get there, but sadly got very sick, and didn't get to enjoy my trip, as spent the whole time on hospital. The Caudwell Team, both staff and medics were absolutely amazing on looking after me and my mummy. The lead medic even stepped in to stop the nurses trying to use my central line without gloves!! They talked to the doctors and helped them understand my condition better and liaised with my medical team back in England. I was flown back to England on a small plane with mummy, and our team back home took over my care. I was stuck in hospital over Christmas, but got back to my local one, near home, where everyone knows me well.
Since getting back, I've change my feed (I have a feeding tube), come off TPN (feed via the blood stream) & IV fluids and amazingly, I've only had one very short, planned admission (for tests!) since I got discharged (I was in, pretty much twice a month for two years before that!). I'm now 10kg heavier than I was at Christmas, and my Physio keeps saying how amazed he is at my strength!
I'm really hoping I will be able to join another Destination Dreams trip one day (last years was considered unfulfilled), so I can actually visit the parks and enjoy myself whilst I'm well, but we want to give seething back to such an amazing charity, to help take other families to Florida, and thank them for what they did for us.
I'm a full time wheelchair user, but I'm doing really well trying to walk with a walking frame and sticks (for physio!). So I'm going to try and run and walk as much of this 1K race as I can. If I get too tired, I'm going to use the seat on my walker, and scoot about with my legs!
