Help Us Help Mothers and Working Caregivers. Donate to the Center for WorkLife Law's COVID-19 Legal Help for Struggling Workers

Mothers are on the frontline of the pandemic, and the picture is pretty sobering. Some are experiencing crushing career setbacks while others face far worse, as job losses and hour cuts have left mothers struggling to pay rent and put food on the table.

For decades, the Center for WorkLife Law has been a leading voice for caregiver rights, developing groundbreaking legal theories and helping countless mothers and caregivers who face everyday discrimination at work. At the start of the pandemic, our team mobilized to create a helpline to provide free legal advice to parents navigating their work and caregiving responsibilities during COVID-19.

WorkLife Law staff has been gratified to directly serve families in need during the crisis through our COVID-19 Legal Helpline, which has now helped almost 1,000 callers, most of whom are people of color and low-wage workers. Our free online COVID-19 resources have reached nearly 14,000 users, and our work has been featured in The New York Times op-ed "Real Life Horror Stories from the World of Pandemic Motherhood" and in Parents.com. We have witnessed firsthand the impact that our COVID-19 help has had in the lives of working caregivers, breastfeeding parents, and pregnant people.

"I was approved for the time of leave. So, I and my girls are so excited that I will be home to help with homework," one caller wrote us. "My older daughter... dropped to her knees and cried thanking me for being able to take the time off to help them."

With our assistance, this caller and hundreds of others have been able to care for their children, look after their own health, and maintain financial stability during the pandemic.

We need your help to continue this important news.

Our team needs funding to help us continue to provide assistance to working caregivers through our free national helpline, trainings, and online resources. We are tremendously grateful for your support.

Example of the kinds of help we've provided:

Our team has provided legal aid to parents facing a wide range of circumstances, from low-wage parents experiencing unsafe work conditions, to mothers being pushed out of leadership positions during the pandemic.

Our callers have included:

  • Working parents and other caregivers who need time off work to care for children, elderly, or disabled family members due to school or care closures
  • Pregnant employees seeking job changes or leave to avoid COVID-19 exposure
  • Employees who need assistance requesting accommodations for health conditions or breastfeeding
  • Parents or other caregivers fired, furloughed, or otherwise penalized because of their COVID-19-related caregiving needs
  • And many others
