Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-shortening genetic condition that slowly destroys the lungs and digestive system. The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is the only UK-wide charity fighting for a life unlimited, when everyone living with CF can look forward to a long, healthy life. www.cysticfibrosis.org.uk

Story

Frist of all, thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to visit my fundraising page. Chances are you don't know me and if that's the case, let me tell you a little bit about why reaching my target of £5,000 is so important to me and my family.

My 12 year old son Daniel suffers with Cystic Fibrosis, which means his lungs and digestion get clogged with thick, sticky mucus, making it difficult for him to breathe. So, to deal with the symptoms, he undergoes two sessions of physio everyday, he takes a whole range of medication, nebulised antibiotics, inhalers and special exercises. This is when he is well. When he's poorly, up to three hours a day can be eaten up with treatment. CF is not curable.... at the moment. But 2006 sees the first human trial of gene therapy. What the scientists are trying to do is to switch the mutated gene for a healthy one. If it works, it will mean a complete cure for Cystic Fibrosis. And what's even better, the cure will be available in five years!!! A cure by the time he's eighteen. I almost can't believe it - but its true!!

But of course its expensive. The trial alone will cost £2.4 million. So that's why I've got my running shoes out again and I'm determined to complete the most challenging road marathon in the world. Please will you help me to give Daniel the best 18 birthday present ever - literally the gift of life?
