Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

For 6 weeks now, Year 6 have read 'A Long Walk to Water', the incredible true story of how Salva Dut, a refugee, fled the civil war in Sudan. The children have researched all about Salva's tribe, learned about his life and have written his biography.

One day, Salva's school was attacked and he had to flee to escape. Along with thousands of other young boys, he walked from Southern Sudan to a refugee camp in Ethiopia.

Four years later, as a teenager, he led 1500 of the boys on an 800-mile trek through the Southern Sudan desert to another refugee camp in Kenya. He did all this, not knowing if his family were dead or alive.

Having later been selected by aid workers to live in America, Salva built a new life for himself. Whilst he was there, he was told his father was still alive, but only just. He had severe illnesses from drinking unsafe water, just like many others in Sudan. This is when  Salva founded a charity called 'Water for Sudan'. Since he set up the charity, he has funded over 500 wells for the people of Southern Sudan, changing lives and giving people hope. However, there is still more work to do to ensure that the people of Sudan have access to safe drinking water.

Year 6 are inspired by Salva's kindness as well as his resilience and determination to succeed even when the odds are against you.

Year 6 will be walking one mile, whilst carrying water, to raise money for those who do not have access to clean water.

Please support our Year 6s by donating to our fund which will be given to Salva Dut's charity, Water for South Sudan.
