Manchester Half Marathon 2023 · 15 October 2023 ·

Set up by the Eritrean community in London in 2018 we help traumatised unaccompanied young asylum seekers and refugees from the Horn of Africa, providing a warm welcome in a safe space, a refuge from the hostile environment, mentoring and advocacy, and a range of wholesome empowering activities.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. My name is Yorkabel Kiflom and I was born in Eritrea and Im 22 years old. Im running a half marathon on the 15th Of October to raise money for Da'aro Youth who help support young asylum seekers & refugees from Horn of Africa.

The UK has always been a destination for individuals seeking safety and refuge from various parts of the world. Among them, East African refugees bring with them stories of resilience , hope, and dreams for a better future. Travelling from what they know, seeking asylum and navigating the challenges they face arriving to the UK hoping to accomplish a new start. As an immigrant child and a daughter of parents who have vivid memories of the journey here to the UK I can vaguely relate to the trauma they experience of feeling alienated from the rest of society.

Da’aro charity provide individuals who arrive here with a sense of worth to know that they’ll be assisted to manoeuvre their way around. Adapting to new culture, language ,way of life and the social norms can be overwhelming. Building a supportive community around them helps play a vital role as they settle down. This brings a source of comfort, guidance and friendship, helping to provide and build continuous relationships and gain trust. I hope to raise money to support the work Da’ro Youth are carrying outThe donations will help to continue to support these young adults who are in crisis or facing issues with social services, housing, homelessness and mental health.  The donations will support Da’ro Youth with the services carried out such as providing case work support for the  young people who attend the youth club.

I aim to run this half-marathon in hopes to raise money to help issue these young adults with a better life and a better community to let them know they’re not alone and that our community will help them heal with their past trauma and know the challenges they face in the world isn’t a reflection of the future but a mould of the strong and powerful men and women they are.
