Story

Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever.Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.

My old friend Brian, has been slowly deteriorating for the last 5 years. He has lost his wife of 48 years and now has to be cared for as he can’t manage by himself anymore. I’ve been helping Brian for the past 4 years, and I’ve watched him slowly slipping away. The twinkle in his eyes, the sharpness of his stories and the energy for walking and keeping himself looking smart and having pride in his appearance has all but disappeared. Such a clever, funny chap, who has led an amazing life with his late wife Sarah, but now, he doesn’t know where he is, who the people are around him. Some days he can’t talk properly or eat his food without choking, he can’t dress or wash himself anymore. This is a man who served in the army, was a head of a company and who traveled every year on wonderful holidays.

Being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia has come  with disbelief and heartache. Brian’s memory and physical abilities have declined much quicker than we could of imagined. It’s so sad to watch this cruel disease take over his life, and it’s happening every day to someone around you. We need to raise money to help find a cure for this illness, that’s why we’re taking on this challenge.

This is for Brian, but it’s also for many more future patients, friends and relatives out there.

Thank you for reading my story.....
